About

I am showcasing my favourite pieces and learning what kind of a photographer I want to be. I have a mathematical background and a keen eye for detail, which I find strongly compliments photography.
Photography has been a pursuit of mine for several years, starting simply, as many do, with my phone camera and Instagram (my now dust-collected handle is louisrarurje). I enjoyed finding aesthetics in what I considered to be overlooked places, such as a small patch of moss on a crumbled wall. The social side of Instagram began to sully my enjoyment - I found myself a little too focussed on farming likes and followers.

I distanced myself from Instagram but continued to enjoy photography. I considered joining other photo-based social media sites but was concerned about repeating my mistakes and wanted to focus purely on photography. So I observed the immortal words of Bender: "Yeah, well, I'm gonna go build my own".
I enjoy architectural photography for its ordinary quality. Most buildings are walked past without a glance, but there is often detail and beauty. I found this to be my main focus when transitioning from snapshots to photographs. As a subject, architecture can be extremely forgiving - after all, it is stationary.
Most recently I have grown an interest in candid street photography. A much more challenging form but with the potential to tell a story beyond the visual. I am currently learning to navigate the social boundaries of candid street photography without infringing people's privacy.
